Are you concerned with internet privacy? You should be, and it’s worse than you imagined! With newly invented technology for facial recognition, your tagged Facebook photos may help the authorities, or even a stranger, ID you while you walk down the street.
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University say that a basic system can compare webcam snapshots and Facebook pictures to make a positive identification in less than three seconds. Alessandro Acquisti and his associates presented their data at a recent Black Hat internet security conference held in Las Vegas.
The program succeeded in correlating some webcam shots to profile pictures on Facebook, and to anonymous dating website pictures. The “Facebook to webcam” system identified 31 percent of people, but only 10 percent of dating website users. The message is loud and clear; anonymity is growing increasingly more difficult to maintain.
