The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced it will invest $76 million towards redeveloping contaminated properties in the country, by means of a nationwide grant program.
The grants are intended to refurbish abandoned commercial and industrial properties like closed smelters and former fuel stations. The agency states that there are nearly a half million such properties in the country. This was announced at a recent press conference.
Representatives for the EPA say these grants will fund projects that will create thousands of employment opportunities, as well as clean up our communities, making them a healthier and more prosperous area in which to begin a business or raise children.
As of today, the EPA has given out over 200 grants to 40 states.
