Hybrid Cars No Longer Getting a Break in California

These vehicles used to be a novel idea. However, their bright yellow stickers are now faded from exposure to sunlight over the years, and their six year run of enjoying HOV-lane privileges in California has come to an abrupt end. Hybrid owners in the state will now have to suffer just like anyone else, as they ride bumper-to-bumper in the non-HOV lanes.

As of July 1st, the 85,000 special yellow stickers that were issued to certain hybrid vehicle owners will expire in the state of California. No more special treatment, as these drivers will now have to sit with everyone else in gridlock, watching the carpoolers in the HOV lanes whiz by at blazing speeds.

Three individual hybrid vehicles had qualified for this special exemption, mainly because their MPG was in excess of 45 miles-per-gallon. They are the Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight and Toyota Prius. Owners of these vehicles who continue to travel in the HOV lanes will now face hefty penalties.
