In today’s age, Americans have more recycling options than ever before. About 40% of Americans have the ability to easily recycle plastic containers. Plastic containers are often used for milk, yogurt, peanut butter, juice, sour cream, butter, cottage cheese, syrup and soda.
A lack of education and convenience are normally the reasons for a lack of participation for consumer recycling. Recycling is most often reviewed as an option rather than a responsibility. People are not responsible and accountable for their recycling decisions.
One way to ensure that consumers participate in recycling is to charge refundable deposits. As Americans, we best responded when our wallet is impacted. Recycling is truly a matter of smart economics. It is about more than “going green” or a better environment. As consumers, we help ourselves when we recycle.
