SunPower has big ideas these days, especially after 60 percent of their solar energy firm was bought this spring by Total S.A., a French oil powerhouse. After recently launching the world’s most efficient solar cell, they have followed that up by unveiling the construction plans for the largest North American solar roof.
SunPower has signed a contract for an over 1 million square foot installation on top of the Gloucester Marine Terminal in Gloucester, New Jersey. The primary competitors for SunPower are Suntech Power, First Solar and the Chinese company Yingli Green Energy Holding Company.
This privately funded project, at a cost of $42 million has already begun and is due to be completed sometime this fall.
