Why is it important to not throw those electronics into the recycling bin?

Old electronic equipmentOld computers (desktop, laptop and tablets), TVs, DVD players, VCRs, cassette decks, CD players, cell phones, video cameras, printers, video game consoles- how many of these do you have stashed away in your closet, basement, attic or storage unit?

When it comes to getting rid of those stored electronics, our natural tendency is to throw them out into the trash or dumpster. But that’s a bad choice, for a number of reasons.

First, many city waste management agencies have banned the dumping of electronic waste (known as e-waste) into landfills which is where all those dumpsters wind up. And the number of those agencies is going up every week.

The other reason is, quite simply, it’s bad for the environment. E-waste in general contains heavy metals such as cadmium and lead. And though e-waste only accounts for about 1-4 percent of municipal waste overall, it can account for as much as 70 percent of the heavy metals in landfills!

With the tendency toward replacing our phones, tablets, laptops, TVs, gaming platforms, etc. with the latest versions, we tend to pile up our obsolete gadgets pretty quickly. If you can’t throw them out, what can you do with them?

The best choice is to recycle them. But there’s still a problem. Most municipal recycling centers are not geared up for recycling e-waste. They’re meant for recycling other material like paper, glass and cans and aren’t equipped to recycle items electronic devices like computers. Electronic devices need safe end-of-life management with a responsible recycling company.

There are specialty e-waste recycling firms that overcome the limitations of municipal recycling centers. Southeastern Data is one such company. It partners with municipalities, businesses, schools, hospitals, apartment or residential complexes and other organizations in “recycling drives” to help you get rid of those old electronic devices in just such a safe and responsible manner.
