So, what do you think happens to that old keyboard and monitor once you have left it at the electronics recycling center? Some computer components are reused by a school or charity.
However, 90 percent or more of the items turned in will be recycled. The various parts of outdated televisions and computers are used in lots of ways, like the following:
- Most glass cathode ray tubes (CRTs) that are domestically processed will be sent to the smelter for recovery of the glass and lead.
- The outer plastic housing will be ground up into small pieces to be reused in things like pothole mix and retaining blocks.
- Chips, circuit boards and other components may be reused for repairing older products, or recycled for scrap.
- The metal components will be sold for scrap value.
